It is a balancing act to pack for a trip to Nepal. In case you do not pack enough, you are prone to hypothermia ot have to cancel your trip. If you pack more than needed, your duffel bag will be too heavy for your porter.

Several people get flummoxed because a trip in Nepal can mean anything from a luxurious flight to a challenging trek in the mountains. Different kinds of travel need different kinds of gear. It is erroneous to buy expensive technical mountaineering boots for a simple trip to a tea house. Or, showing up at the top of a mountain wearing just a hiking jacket is equally concerning.

Check this out so you have a proper idea of what to pack based on your plans to help you save money and space in your luggage.

TREKKING TACTICS

Let’s see how you are supposed to pack for the trek to go on the Everest Cho La Pass Gokyo Trek for your reference. Trekkers opting for this circuit should be aware that this is not as convenient as walking on a road. You will cross a glacier and a high pass that is 5,420 meters high.

Shoes: Plastic mountaineering boots? No. It is highly recommended to have a good pair of waterproof hiking boots, which are either synthetic or leather, that give your ankles enough support. That is all you need. However, make sure you have worn your hiking boots enough that the materials have softened and moulded to the unique shape of your feet.

Essential Extras: Bring microscopes like Kathoola or YakTraz with you because the Cho La Pass often has a section of hard-packed ice or a dangerous glacier. These are small rubber chains with spikes that slide over your shoes. It does not weigh much, but they are very important for the safety of the pass.

Layers: Forbid using cotton. For the evenings, you need a good down jacket, a fleece mid-layer to keep you warm, and a woollen base layer. Note that the wind can be very strong on the Gokyo Ridge. So, keep a hard-shell jacket that keeps out water and wind.

With that, one thick and one waterproof pair of gloves will immensely help you battle the cold while crossing the pass and taking pictures. Carry a sun hat and a warm beanie as well, ensuring the utmost protection.

MANAGEMENT FOR THE MOUNTAINS

This is mainly for those who are planning to go on Island Peak Climbing or Mera Peak Climbing. As you transition from the environment where you need to survive to the technical difficulties, the need for gear will accordingly change. In such cases of climbing a peak that is 6,000 meters high, renting instead of buying is the most important implementation to be done.

Foremost, you will need an ice axe, carabiners, crampons that are the heavy steel kind, a figure-8 descender, an ascender, and a climbing harness. In Mera Peak ot Island Peak, you will be able to rent good equipment. So, only consider buying if you are passionate about climbing and plan to go further consistently.

Regarding the footwear, regular hiking boots won’t be enough for the last push at the top. You need double boots, which are plastic or composite boots with a liner inside. These are meant to keep you from getting frostbite at high altitudes. Yes, you can rent these again.

It is ideal to rent hardware. However, having your own clothes for high altitudes is quintessential. Bring glacier glasses with side shields to keep you from going blind in the snow, a heavy-duty down parka, and summit mitts.

If you are climbing one of those peaks, you will sleep in a tent at the base camp or the high peak. So, you need a sleeping bag that can handle temperatures as low as -20°C or -30°C.

LIGHT LUXURY

This section is for those who plan on going to the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour. People who come to take helicopter rides often dress as if they are going to climb Mount Everest itself. Be reminded that that is not necessary.

You can travel a lot lighter, even though it is better to be too hot than too cold. As you are not involved in the walk, hiking boots are not needed. Also, you won’t have to walk on snow for long when you land.

So, you can wear sneakers or casual shoes that are comfortable.

Take your time looking good for the absolutely attractive pictures you will take. But do not leave practicality behind. It will be windy when the helicopter lands. Accordingly, wear a thermal layer under your jeans or pants. The most important thing is a down jacket that is both stylish and warm.

It is never a bad idea to have your sunglasses with you. As the light is very bright at 5,500 meters, that is a must-have accessory. Moreover, a first aid kit, water purification tablets, or a backpack is not required. Do remember to have the camera gear with you so you can take pictures from every perspective you have planned.

Have a wide-angle camera lens? Bring it. You will get to take pictures of how big, intimidating, and proud the mountains look from the cockpit.

BASICS

Most people tend to forget the significance of the rudimentary essentials that need to be carried. Bring your sun protection to save yourself from the strong UV rays. Whether they are on the Everest Co La Gokyo Trek or an Everest helicopter tour, bring lip balm and sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher

Moreover, note that the cold, dry air causes the Khumbu Cough. That is why having cough drops with you will ease your throat, keeping it moist. Also, cold weather is known for draining the batteries quickly. So, carry a power bank with a lot of power and keep it warmly inside your jacket or sleeping bag pocket.

In conclusion, it is a primary need to integrate a packing list that fits your specific goal. Do not neglect comfort for the sake of convenience, or prefer convenience at the expense of comfort.

Now that you know what to pack, when are you arriving with the right bag?
